Lt. Gen. David W. Barno (Ret.) is director of the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a master's degree in national security studies from Georgetown University, Barno has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the continental United States and around the world. General Barno deployed in October 2003 to Afghanistan, commanding more than 20,000 U. S. and coalition forces as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, for 19 months.
