After remarks by Ambassador Rahul Chhabra, who served as India’s secretary of economic relations, a panel of UVA experts including Indrani Chatterjee, John Echeverri-Gent, and moderator Jeffrey Legro will discuss trade and broader U.S. economic and political relations with the Modi government.

Indrani Chatterjee headshot

Indrani Chatterjee

Indrani Chatterjee is the John L. Nau III Distinguished Professor of the History and Principles of Democracy, a professor of history, and distinguished chair on democracy and the history of South Asia at the University of Virginia. Chatterjee researches the intersections of gender, religion, and politics between the late 17th and 20th centuries and is the author of Gender, Slavery and the Law in Colonial India (1999) and Forgotten Friends: Monks, Marriages and Memories of Northeast India (2013). She is also editor of Unfamiliar Relations: Family and History in South Asia (2006) and coeditor with Richard Eaton of Slavery and South Asian History (2007). An alumna of St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Chatterjee earned her PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

Ambassador Rahul Chhabra

Ambassador Rahul Chhabra held the post of secretary of economic relations in India’s Ministry of External Affairs until his retirement in July 2021. He spearheaded India’s US$40 billion Development Partnership Program and guided EXIM Bank of India policies as a board member, coordinating India's positions in multilateral economic organizations. Chhabra also served as high commissioner to Kenya, ambassador to Somalia, permanent representative to the the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and ambassador to Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He earned an undergraduate degree in economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, a postgraduate degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics, and a MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.

John Echeverri-Gent headshot

John Echeverri-Gent

John Echeverri-Gent is an associate professor in the department of politics at the University of Virginia. He is the author of The State and the Poor: Public Policy and Political Development in India and the United States and co-editor of Interpreting Politics: Situated Knowledge, India, and the Rudolph Legacy and Economic Reform in Three Giants: U.S. Foreign Policy and the USSR, China, and India. He has published widely on comparative public policy and the political economy of development. Echeverri-Gent is a member of the editorial board of Political Science Quarterly and has also served as a MacArthur scholar, senior fellow at the American Institute of Indian Studies, and Fulbright scholar.  He holds an MA and PhD in political science from the University of Chicago.

Jeffrey W. Legro (moderator)

Jeffrey W. Legro, a Miller Center nonresident senior fellow, is university professor at the University of Richmond, where he was also the executive vice president and provost from 2017 to 2023. He was previously the Ambassador Henry J. Taylor and Mrs. Marion R. Taylor Professor and vice provost for global affairs at the University of Virginia. Legro is the author of  Rethinking the World: Great Power Strategies and International Order and Cooperation Under Fire: Restraint During World War II. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a board member of the Richmond World Affairs Council. Legro holds a BA in Russian and economics from Middlebury College and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
