Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, is the author of James Madison: A Life Reconsidered, a new biography about the fourth U.S. president. She writes that Madison, while outwardly reserved, was the intellectual driving force behind the Constitution and crucial to its ratification. His visionary political philosophy and rationale for the union of states, presented in The Federalist papers, helped shape the country Americans live in today. Lynne Cheney's other books include the New York Times bestsellers We the People: The Story of Our Constitution and America: A Patriotic Primer.
