Retired senior C.I.A. analyst Robert M. Field served as a China specialist from 1957-1988. With A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard, Field has served as a lecturer in Asian Studies in the School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, and presently is a consultant to the World Bank and other organizations. He has published more than 40 articles on Chinese population and manpower, and industry and agriculture issues.
