Event Details
The intellectual centerpiece of the the Miller Center Fellowship Spring Conference, the manuscript review continues our tradition of considering an important forthcoming book by a leading scholar of history or social science. This year, Princeton University’s Kevin Kruse will present his manuscript One Nation Under God: Corporations, Christianity and the Rise of the Religious Right. Providing commentary will be a panel that includes Reihan Salam of National Review, Darren Dochuk of Washington University in St. Louis, and Michael Lienesch of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Miller Center has compiled an impressive record of picking “winners” when it comes to manuscripts. In previous years we have reviewed Lisa Cobbs Hoffman’s American Umpire: The United States and the International Order Since 1776 (Harvard, 2012), Mel Leffler’s For the Soul of Mankind (Hill and Wang, 2008), James Patterson’s Restless Giant (Oxford University Press, 2007), and Tom Sugrue’s Sweet Land of Liberty (Random House, 2008). In 2011, Ira Katznelson’s manuscript of Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time was reviewed by a panel that included Stanford’s David Kennedy and Harvard’s Daryl Michael Scott. The book was recently released to rave reviews in venues like the New Yorker, which called Katznelson’s challenge to New Deal history “ambitious, fascinating, and slightly dark.”
