The 1876 election saw the highest voter turnout of any in U.S. history (82%) and was decided by a single electoral vote. MICHAEL F. HOLT, who serves as Langbourne M. Williams Professor of American History at U.Va., explains why this election was so close. His books include “The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party,” The Fate of Their Country: Politicians, Slavery Extension, and the Coming of the Civil War,” and “By One Vote: The Disputed Presidential Election of 1876.” A book signing will follow his Forum.
