Mary Kate Cary

Cary is the Miller Center's Anne C. Strickler Practitioner Senior Fellow. She served as a White House speechwriter for President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to early 1992, authoring more than 100 of his presidential addresses. She also has ghostwritten several books related to President Bush’s life and career and served as senior writer for communications for the 1988 Bush-Quayle presidential campaign.

Nicole Hemmer

Nicole Hemmer

Hemmer is an expert on the history of American politics and media. As an assistant professor in presidential studies at the Miller Center, she works on a wide-ranging set of projects, both scholarly and public. She works in the Presidential Recordings program, focusing on the Nixon administration and its media relations. Her broader scholarship focuses on the history of conservatism and media. Her first book, Messengers of the Right , charts the history of conservative media activism in the United States, and her current work-in-progress is a history of conservatism in the 1990s. Her newest podcast, "A12," chronicles the violence that took place in Charlottesville on August 11 and 12, 2017.
