The Gordon and Mary Beth Smyth Forum on American History
William M. Freehling, in the second volume of his magisterial study of the South's road to disunion, explains how a secessionist minority in the lower South exploited sectional tensions to forge a majority for disunion. Freehling, a winner of both the Bancroft and Nevins prizes, is a fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
