Robert Pelletreau served as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs from 1994 to 1997. Prior to that, he served as U.S. ambassador to Egypt and Bahrain. His other assignments in the Foreign Service included Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, and Syria as well as senior positions in the Departments of State and Defense. Edmund Ghareeb is the American University?s Center for Global Peace?s first Mustafa Barzani Scholar of Global Kurdish Studies. He is also an adjunct professor of Middle East history and politics in the School of International Service at American University.
