Karen Dunn is a partner at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP. As the American Lawyer noted when naming Karen a 2017 Litigator of the Year, she specializes in “high-stakes, high-profile and hard-fought” cases, securing important trial wins for some of the country’s most prominent technology companies, including Uber, Apple, and Oracle. Dunn previously served in all three branches of government, and she has been named one of Elle Magazine’s Most Compelling Women in Washington D.C. Her work preparing candidates for political debates, including President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, has received extensive media coverage.

Roberta Kaplan is the founding partner of Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP. Among other accolades, Kaplan has been selected as one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers” in the United States, “Litigator of the Year,” “Lawyer of the Year,” and “Most Innovative Lawyer of The Year.” In 2013, her landmark victory in United States v. Windsor brought down the Defense of Marriage Act, landing the first major legal victory in the battle for marriage equality. Kaplan is also the co-founder of the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund and an adjunct professor of law at Columbia Law School.

Amy Spitalnick is the executive director of Integrity First for America. She previously served as communications director and senior policy advisor to the New York Attorney General; communications advisor and spokesperson for the New York City Mayor; and communications director in the New York State Senate. She has also worked on a variety of local, state, and federal campaigns and advocacy organizations. Spitalnick frequently appears in national media and has been awarded a number of fellowships and honors, including being named a Women inPower Fellow at the 92nd Street Y, a Truman National Security Project Fellow, and a City & State 40 Under 40 Rising Star.

Risa Goluboff, a Miller Center faculty senior fellow, is dean of the University of Virginia School of Law and a nationally renowned legal historian whose scholarship and teaching focuses on American constitutional and civil rights law, especially their historical development in the 20th century. In addition to serving as dean, Goluboff is the Arnold H. Leon Professor of Law and a professor of history at UVA. Prior to joining the Law School in 2002, Goluboff clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Micah Schwartzman is the Joseph W. Dorn Research Professor of Law and director of the Karsh Center for Law and Democracy. He teaches constitutional law and the First Amendment (Religion Clauses). His areas of interest include law and religion, jurisprudence, and political philosophy. Schwartzman received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his doctorate in politics from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. During law school, he served as articles development editor of the Virginia Law Review and received numerous awards, including the Margaret G. Hyde Award, the Daniel Rosenbloom Award, and the Hardy Cross Dillard Scholarship. After graduating, Schwartzman clerked for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Prior to joining the faculty, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Columbia University’s Society of Fellows in the Humanities. In the spring of 2013, he was a visiting professor at the UCLA School of Law.

Ian H. Solomon is dean of the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Trained as a lawyer, Solomon is a devoted student and teacher of negotiation and conflict resolution, and over the course of his career, he has dedicated himself to improving the lives of people across the globe. For four years, Solomon served in the U.S. Senate as legislative counsel to then-Senator Barack Obama. Later, under the Obama administration, he was confirmed unanimously by Congress as the U.S. executive director for the World Bank Group. Solomon has also been a consultant with McKinsey & Company, an associate dean and visiting lecturer at Yale Law School, and a vice president and lecturer in law at the University of Chicago. Before joining the Batten School, he led his own international consulting practice focused on conflict and collaboration.
