The Miller Center's director at the time of the attacks, Philip Zelikow led the 9/11 Commission as executive director before returning to Grounds
Philip Zelikow left his post as director and CEO of the Miller Center to assume the role of executive director of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States in late January 2003. Uniquely qualified for the position, Zelikow offered the University of Virginia community unprecedented insights on the attacks, both in their immediate aftermath and years into the future, through several Miller Center events.

Just more than one year later, on October 11, 2002, before assuming his position at the Commission, Zelikow took a Miller Center audience through his analysis of the changed national security landscape. Former Miller Center Director Ken Thompson provided the introduction.

‘The country didn't really know it was at war’
The Commission issued its report on July 22, 2004. Zelikow oversaw the work of 78 staff members, who produced the report for the ten-member Commission led by Thomas H. Kean. He returned to the Miller Center for two events, looking at the road to 9/11 on September 10, 2004 and the road from 9/11 on October 14. George Gilliam hosted both sessions.
