Lawrence Washington was ill. Leaving his family behind—a wife and infant daughter—and willing to risk weeks on the open sea during hurricane season—he would try the air of Barbados, or perish. Thankfully, Lawrence did not have to travel alone. His half-brother George, then only 19 years old, accompanied him.
